1 of 4 people think the Kenyan Agtech space is crowded. But is it really?

Happy new year! (A few of you said that we didn't say this in the previous post... ).

To kick us off this year, we look at the Agtech (Technology in agriculture) space in Kenya. Some of the companies listed operate in other African countries as well.

In this post we look at some of the Agtech categories that are the most or least explored. We hope that you this information will provide guidance to all those intending to join Agtech.

There are a million and one companies out there that we do not know of that are of great value and doing great things. (We would like to know them, maybe they can attract funding. Write to us here.

For starters, we have divided this sectors into 4 categories that we felt matched the Kenyan ecosystem. Of course there are categories such as hydroponics which we did not delve into but are still not well explored maybe due to the intensive capital requirements.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive.

We looked at over 20 Agtech companies and gave each a category. We noted the following:

  1. Startups inclined towards increasing productivity through information were the most;

  2. Startups inclined towards financial inclusion came second.

  3. Market linkage startups and those that use data analytics and AI to inform decisions were almost similar in number.

  4. There is some overlap between some categories.

Have a look at our infographic (we looked at close to 25 Agtech startups) for a summary.
